Jayme Illien proposed the idea of ​​World Happiness Day at the 2011 United Nations General Assembly. His ambition was to boost the global Happiness economy by improving the economic development of all countries.

In 2013, 193 member states of the United Nations celebrated the first day of International Happiness Day.

In 2015, the United Nations created 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with the goal of reducing poverty, inequality, and protecting the environment – three of the key components of happiness and well-being.

Bhutan became the first country to take action to introduce a concept of happiness based on Gross National Happiness (GNH). Since then the League of Nations has adopted the principles of sustainable development with a view to focusing on the factors that affect human happiness no matter where one lives, such as poverty alleviation and inequality, and environmental protection.

This year the theme for International Fun Day is “Build Back Happier”. One cannot help but think of this theme as a beautiful thought recalling the chaos caused by the COVID-19 epidemic.
