Open the Messages app.

Each method leads to the successful blocking of the number. If you have a text conversation in Messages, it will be moved to Spam and blocked. You can unblock numbers in your Phone by going to Settings > Blocked numbers.
Other text messaging apps to consider

Another option that might interest you is Signal. This is a lesser-known app that offers end-to-end encryption. It’s great for security and control who can contact you, but both ends of the conversation must have a signal to use its security features. The latter could work better as a group chat tool rather than a complete replacement for text messaging.
